Under-17 Girls NCS Semifinal
PA Classics 3, Patriots FC 0
On a hot afternoon on the Council Rock North turf, the first goal was going to be vital as the PA Classics and Patriots FC Red battled for the final spot in the U-17 NCS championship. In the opening minute, Patriots FC nearly grabbed the first off a Keegan Terry corner. Following a scramble in front of the goal, Addison Martin had a great look that was cleared off the line by Morgan Minnich.
Shortly after, Classics midfielder Sophie Toucher beat the Patriots defense down the left side, cutting into a goal, but smashed the near post. From then on, the Classics controlled the flow of the game and nearly scored off a free kick that Patriots defender Sophia Smith cleared away at the back post. Toucher found the first goal of the game after a Patriots turnover, and on a similar cut from her previous attempt found the back the back of the net at the near post. Three minutes later, PA Classics doubled their lead. Paige Claudfelter pounced on a corner and beat a Patriots defender in a tight space before slotting the ball home. Patriots almost pulled a goal back on another corner scramble, but Samantha Geib’s shot was stopped at the near post, and her follow up was saved by Classics keeper Julieanna Albu
Patriots FC fought to get back into the game in the second half, with Terry and Martin providing strong efforts through central midfield, but a combination of the Classics stellar defending and the draining heat kept the hosts from scoring the goal they needed.
The Classics looked to finish the game on the counter, and Toucher had a great opportunity on a breakaway with fifteen minutes to play, but Patriots keeper Sophia Mills held strong to deny her at close range. Patriots forward Darcy Mccullough had her team’s best chance to pull a goal back off a long throw in late in the game, but her pressured volley sailed high. With only minutes remaining, Claudfelter broke the Patriots back line on another counter and beat Mills off the dribble before being pulled down inside the box. Toucher finished off the penalty to send the Classics into the final where they will meet Steel United. Who were 3-1 winners over Capital Area in the other semifinal.
Under-19 President’s Cup Semifinal
VE Timbers 3, Lionville SC Chargers 0
VE Timbers and Lionville Chargers battled for the final spot in the EPYSA youth cups Thursday night at the VE club in Warminster. In an exciting game with plenty of back-and-forth action, VE scored late in the first half then added two more goals in the second to advance to the U-19 final.
Lionville created some of the game’s better chances in the opening minutes, putting the hosts on their heels. Breydon Conroy beat his defender down the right side but didn’t get enough on his shot to beat VE keeper Jeffrey Simons at the near post. Ten minutes into the game, VE’s Quincy Wade made a good run in behind the defense, but Lionville’s keeper Emmett Brennan made a solid save with his legs to keep the ball out. Both teams traded chances throughout the half, but the action picked up in the final fifteen minutes. Lionville broke the VE backline with a long ball over the top, but Simons pushed a aside a clean strike from Controy. On the ensuing corner, Conroy fought through several VE defenders to get off a shot from close range, but Simons made the stop again.
VE gained some momentum late in the half with Wade, McCarthy Gomes, and Anthony Abreu creating the best chances at goal, but Abreu’s late strike found the back of the net and broke the deadlock before the break.
Minutes into the second half, VE added another goal off a long free kick. Though it’s unsure whether Joseph Mahon got a head on the cross or not, he heavily influenced a challenge that led to the goal and gave the hosts a commanding lead. Lionville responded immediately with Conroy creating with another chance that sailed over the bar.
Abreu became even more dangerous as the game continued, creating a great chance to extend the lead after beating his man down the left and sending in a low cross, but Cristian Hinkel’s shot was blocked in front by a great effort from Lionville defender Jason Disalvo. Lionville’s defensive efforts nearly turned the game when five minutes later, Jacob Staub had a great opportunity outside the six on a low cross, but his volley off a tricky bounce hit the bar.
With time winding down, Lionville continued to press for a goal, and Brandon Ramirez’s volley off a corner deflected on its way into Simons. Abreu, enjoying more freedom with the Lionville defenders pushing forward, almost added a second. His give-and-go with Daniel Fox produced another fine save from Brennan. VE scored a third in the final minutes off another strong challenge off a corner, and a Lionville defender’s unfortunate clearance found the back of the next to extend VE’s lead to 3-0.
The Timbers will meet fellow club side VE Rhinelander in an all-club final with a chance to advance to region one play.
